Yanomami 30th Anniversary
We are proud to be working with Yanomami on a collection of special edition apparel to celebrate their 30th anniversary. VC's CEO Adriana Withers shares a story from the first time she met the famous team from Venezuela.
WUCC 2002
It was at the WFDF World Ultimate Club Championships in Hawaii in 2002. I was on the roster for Urge, a women's team from Toronto; but having broken my throwing hand at a tournament two weeks earlier, I was much more focused on the VC tent.
It was the first time VC appeared at a big international tournament, and my mind was blown. I spent the week running back and forth between the fields and the VC tent, having the time of my life.
The fun continued back at the VC condo one night as we hosted friends from my team and from home for a few drinks before heading out to find that night's tournament party.
World's Best & Most Welcome Party Crashers
Suddenly, the door to our condo burst open with the loudest wave of Spirit the Hawaiian shores had ever heard. In filed a conga line of dancing, drumming, singing, and smiling strangers.
Toronto 1991. Jesus Loretto plays the congas.
This was my first encounter with the wonderful players of Yanomami, one of the most storied ultimate teams on the planet.
My friends and I joined in, laughing and dancing and making friends for the rest of our ultimate days.
Much like the first time I met the players from Revolution in Colombia, I felt as though this team was the true embodiment of Spirit of the Game and I've been absolutely hooked on international ultimate tournaments since – all thanks to this encounter 20 years ago.
World Championships in Hawaii. The first ever Latin American team to compete!
The Fun Continues
Over the last 20 years, I've had the good luck to cross paths with Jesus and Maria Loretto and the Yanomami crew in more places than I can name – from the Daiquiri Deck in Sarasota to the WFDF fields in Canada and in Europe.
Vancouver's 2016 WFDF World Ultimate and Guts Championship.
They always bring the most wonderful energy and smile with them, and I'm grateful for all they have done to support and grow ultimate.
