Easy Uniform Guidelines: Ultimate Canada

Here's the scenario: you just came up with an amazing concept for your team's next jersey and you swiftly jot down a sketch in your notebook. The next day, you send it to your favourite apparel company (VC Ultimate, let's say) to get a quote, but when you hear back from their efficient salesperson, they tell you your jersey doesn't meet the uniform guidelines... isn't that the worst?

Your next step would normally be to read through Ultimate Canada's lengthy tournament manual and search through a handful of appendices, but not today! To help simplify the process, we've resumed below all the uniform requirements stated by Ultimate Canada, in terms everyone can understand.

Here are the rules you must comply with when creating your new favourite jersey:

1. The team name, player nicknames, logos used, and overall design of the jersey must be appropriate.
2. Everyone on the team must wear jerseys of identical colour/design. As well, uniform bottoms (pants or shorts) must be of identical colour and design. 
3. Teams must have two jerseys of distinctly different colour.
4. Jerseys must have numbers on the back. The numbers must be at least 6 inches tall, be one- or two-digit Arabic numbers, must be in clear contrast with the jersey colour, and have sufficient negative space surrounding them to allow visibility. No two players on a given team may use the same number, or numbers with the same value (i.e. 00 and 0, or 01 and 1).
5. Back numbers must be centred in the middle/upper portion of the jersey. Numbers along the bottom, shoulder, or side of the jersey do not meet this requirement. 
6. Teams must have numbers on either the front of their jerseys, or the front of their uniform bottoms (pants or shorts). The numbers must be at least 2 inches tall, match the number on the back of their jersey, and must be in clear contrast with the jersey (or uniform bottom) colour.
7. All numbers must be legible at a distance. Embellished, distressed, or very thin fonts should be avoided. 
8. Uniforms are mandatory for the Canadian Ultimate Championships, and recommended for all other tournaments.
