Ultimate is NOT Cancelled
It's been a heartbreaking week for ultimate players and organizers, as well as repercussions for those of us who are lucky enough to work in this sport.
It started when a few college tournaments had to be cancelled due to host schools suspending classes or banning travel, and peaked late last night with the Premier Ultimate League and AUDL suspending their 2020 seasons indefinitely. Over the last few days, the list of small and large established tournaments and events all over the world only grew longer.
I've been working in ultimate for over 20 years, and this is the first time we were ever affected by anything of this magnitude. I see all of you who have put in countless hours to make your game, your program, your tournament - your community - the best it could be, and who are left feeling disappointed, lost or alone.
I keep hearing and reading comments such as "Ultimate is cancelled", and I really want to state one thing:
You can't cancel ultimate. We are more than a season or a tournament; we are a community, and we are still here.
We owe it to each other to take this seriously. To be as smart and healthy as we can be, so we can come back and take the field just as strong as we left it. And, when we do – every play, every game and every teammate will be that much more appreciated.
In the meantime, please be patient with organizers, tournament directors and each other. Everyone is doing their best given the circumstances.
We'll be back. In the meantime, we're still here – and we're still doing everything we can to support our community.
Take care, stay positive and support each other.
